HELP
MY phone bills for my house phone have recently gone up to around £60! and they used to be around £30 (at MOST).
I was wondering whether this was because i am using Internet Explorer?
Surfing the web though IE doesnt charge you does it? (like through your phone line etc)
IF IT DOES
do programmes like FireFox?
i have AOL on my ‘main’ PC downstairs (but personally i dont like it – so i havent installed it upstairs on my work laptop). I am running through my wireless (AOL), but going through IE woudnt charge me would it??!!
PLEASE ANSWER WITH HELPFULL SUGGESTION, and not just "yes" or "no".
I cannot afford to keep paying this much per month for my phone bill so PLEASE help me people!!
What ever browser you use doesn’t make any difference to the cost.
Sounds like you have picked up a premium number somewhere. Go to > Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections and see if you have any phone numbers in there you shouldn’t have. If you have, delete them.
It’s always worth checking that every day!

Surfing the internet with any browser will not raise your phone bill. Firefox is the best of the 3 you mention and stay way from AOL. If I were you, I would call the phone company and see why the rates have gone up.

i use Firefox but I”m with tiscali but i don”t know if they charge

No web browsers charge you for using the internet.
However, your ISP will charge you for the time you spend on the internet. You may want to check with them what rate you”re on.
If you”re using dial-up, you may have a program called a ”dialer” on your computer. A dialer is malicious software which sets your computer to dial a premium-rate number when you connect to the internet instead of your ISPs number. Run a scan using SpyBot [ http://spybot.info ] to check you don”t have one on your computer.

it doesn”t matter what web browser you use you don”t get charged for using it, if you have a high phone bill ask for an itemised bill someone may be using your phone without your knowledge it”s the only way the bill can go so high
are you still on dial up or broad band if you”re on dial up you may have caught a dialer they change your dial up number to a premium rate call to check for this run a spyware scan if you don”t have anti-spyware download spybot search and destroy from here http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.htmlhttp://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Are you on Dial-up or Broadband, If on Dial-up then you pay by the minute, that could be your problem. If you are on Broadband then you pay a certain amount a month plus the cost of your telephone calls.

it is your IP that you pay for. AOL IE or FireFox do not charge anything.

If you”re using broadband your internet usage will not affect your phone bill (other than the fixed monthly fee for broadband access which you pay to your ISP). I am not aware of any ”pay-as-you-go” broadband accounts.
If you”re on dial-up you might be on a ”pay-as-you-go” contract. If so, you may have let your usage increase without realising it. Easily done.
If you”re on a fixed dial-up contract it”s possible you”re using the wrong number to connect. Check this through your internet connection properties and check with your ISP to find out what number you should be using.
You should also update your antivirus software and run a complete scan to see if a rogue dialler has been installed (and remove it). These use premium rate numbers and dial out when the pc is not being used, but has been left switched on, or replace your normal dial-up number with a premium rate one. They can be installed from virtually any web site that has been hacked, but are usually when visiting porn sites.
If you”re on broadband and still have your old dial-up modem plugged in you probably don”t need it anyway so just unplug it and your problem is solved IF that”s what”s caused the high bill. Plug it in temporarily if you use your pc for sending faxes or use other software that requires a dial-up modem.
Also, query the high bill and get a list of all call details. There may be numbers you don”t recognise, perhaps someone has used a premium rate number (support calls to ISPs at £1.50/minute, customer service numbers, even porn lines).
Good luck!
